In the area of annual Colorado bike tours, BABRAC2014 is a noteworthy newcomer. Summer 2014 is your chance to be among the first to know about it. Some fast facts:
BABRAC stands for Beer And Bike Ride Across Colorado
If a strange-sounding acronym for a fun-centric cross-state bike ride sounds familiar, it is. BABRAC is inspired by Iowa’s famous annual RAGBRAI.
BABRAC is a two-year-old love child
BABRAC was founded last year by five Denverite friends with a passion for bikes and beer. Imagine a summer fling between Colorado’s hot craft brewery scene and its adventurous mountain road biking routes. BABRAC would be their love child. The idea was conceived in 2012 and the first-annual BABRAC ride was born in July, 2013.
Since the ride is a labor of love for its founding fathers and mothers, we do it for free. The idea is to share an amazing bike tour with optional SAG vehicle support and camping accommodations at cost to all riders, including ourselves. No mark-up. This means it’s about as affordable as an organized, supported bike tour can be.
You can choose your bike trip length and intensity
This year, the core ride is 5 days long. It begins in Montrose on Tues August 12, with stops in Gunnison, Buena Vista, Dillon, and Idaho Springs before arriving to Denver on Sun Aug 17. We’ll be conquering a mountain pass each day.
If 5 days is a little much, catch the final 2-day ride from Dillon to Denver. If 5 days isn’t enough, we’ll have a 2-day pre-ride starting in Durango and passing through Telluride on the way to Montrose, for a total of 7 epic days on the bike.
Hot springs. There will be hot springs.
We discovered in Pagosa Springs last year that a soak in a hot spring is an ultimate way to end a big day of riding and beer tasting. This year, we’ll be camping at Cottonwood Hot Springs in Buena Vista (with 24-hour access to the pools!), as well as checking out the Indian Springs in Idaho Springs, just across the highway from Tommyknockers Brewery.
Fancy jerseys await
We did enjoy the motley look and feel of last year’s ride, but this year we’re partnering with Primal to design spiffy BABRAC2014 jerseys. They’ll feature fun art and logos for breweries and tour sponsors, who are likely to hook us up with plenty of freebies and swag along the ride.
